"Kia ora, my name is Tāmati Rimene-Sproat. My whānau are from Wairarapa. I’m a journalist, television presenter and a pretty average (but avid) hunter. Growing up in Wellington, I wasn’t exposed to hunting at all. My father, uncles, mother, aunties cousins never hunted but once I got a taste, it became an obsession. For me, hunting wasn’t, and still isn’t, about just shooting an animal. It has always been about the experience of going bush and the challenge of finding, stalking and (when I shoot straight) harvesting wild game.
For me, there’s something incredibly rewarding about getting outdoors and pushing yourself physically and mentally. Even if I don’t come home with anything to feed my family or hang on the wall, being able to clear my mind and reconnect with the land is something that will always make a hunt successful.
I’ve been lucky to have presented The show Wild Kai Legends over the past two seasons and one of the things I hear often is how other hunters feel the same way. Hunting is not all about the kai (although that is a big bonus), it’s about manaakitanga. Looking after yourself, looking after your whānau, and looking after the beautiful bush we love to roam."
